IHC Telecom Art Awards

Since its inception five years ago, the IHC Telecom Art Awards have played a vital role in showcasing the talent of artists with an intellectual disability.  The awards were established to encourage, support and recognise the art and creativity of people with intellectual disabilities.  The event is steadily growing, with more than 400 people entering in 2009.

Four recognised artists and designers from the art and creative industries will judge the IHC Telecom Art Awards 2010.  Head of WORLD fashion house Denise L'Estrange-Corbet is back for her second time judging, sharing the panel with artists Otis Frizzell and Sue Upritchard, and Saatchi Design Worldwide creative director Blake Enting.

The South Island Regional Finals, held this year for the first time at COCA Gallery, will showcase the work of artists from around the South Island; Takaka to Tai Tapu, Nelson to Naseby.

From this regional exhibition, 10 finalists will go on to the National Finals at the St James Theatre Gallery, Wellington, from 14-21 September.   The overall winners will be announced at the National Finals Awards, Tuesday 21 September and members of the public can bid online to purchase and take home their favourite works of art.

Southern IDEA Services would like to thank COCA Gallery for exhibiting this unique exhibition in an accessible public gallery in the heart of the city and for supporting local artists with an intellectual disability.
